Introduction

Farmville is one of many Farming Simulation games on Facebook but possibly is the most popular. Celebrating its first year Anniversary, it has developed enormously since its inception. As an online game, new options are added and Limited Edition items are subtracted from the game constantly. A notation usually appears in the Market in the description of any Limited Edition item to let you know how much longer it will be available. Some Limited Edition Items have been included in this Guide for reference purposes even if not currently available.

As of July 2011, many new options have been added to the game, giving it detail and complexity. A Greenhouse where hybrid Crops can be created and a Duck Pond where Ducklings can be hatched have been available for a number of months. The Orchard is an option that was introduced near the end of 2010 and which allows a player to group 20 Trees and to harvest them instantly for 'Mystery Seedlings'. Watering Cans can be purchased or given as Gifts by Friends and Neighbours. A total of 8 Watering Cans is required to bring the sapling to maturity and discover its identity. Originally, the number required was 10, but that was modified to allow players to grow their Mystery Saplings more quickly.

The most recent additions to the game include a Workshop and Crafting Silo. Both can be placed on either or both farms and are accompanied by a new set of Recipes for Items that are as diverse as construction materials or Cottages. A full list of the Recipes is given in a section of this guide devoted to the Workshop and Silo.

Mastery of Trees was introduced last year but Mastery of Animals soon will be added to the game as well. In the past week, players have been able to harvest Animals and Trees for special items that are used in the new Workshop.

Sheep Breeding and Pig Breeding, introduced a few months ago, now have been expanded and new patterns can be earned through Mastery. The rules with respect to breeding have changed as have the rules with respect to the growth of Mystery Seedlings. Details are given in the sections of this guide devoted to the Orchards, Sheep Pen and Pig Pen respectively.

Special Holiday Buildings have been released for all the major festivals, including Hallowe'en, Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day and Easter. These often include construction projects for buildings that offer a variety of rewards, unlike the buildings that are sold as Decorations.

Initial Walkthrough

You can enter into the World of Farmville in one of two fashions. You either can go directly to the Game and allow the Application to run or you can respond to a Request from another Player to become his/her Neighbour. In responding, the Application will ask for permission to run. You then will be taken to your Farm and given a little Tutorial.

In terms of actual farming, the options are very simple at the start.. You arrive in Farmville with 200 Coins and 5 Farmville dollars with six tilled plots. One plot is filled with Eggplant and another with Strawberries ready to be harvested. Strawberry and Eggplant in two other plots are 50% grown. It costs 15 Coins to till one square. You will obtain 35 Coins when you harvest the Strawberries and 88 Coins when you harvest the Eggplant. You then will have a total of 323 Coins.

After plowing the two squares that become fallow land after harvest, you will have 293 Coins. You now should go to the Market to purchase four Seeds to plant in your four remaining tilled squares.

Your choices at Level 1 are: Strawberries, Eggplant, Wheat, Soybeans and Peanuts. If you are determined to increase your Levels and unlock more Seed types as quickly as possible, you may choose Strawberries as the fastest growing Crop available at the initial Level. It takes only 4 hours to mature, selling for 35 Coins and giving you 1 XP. The price of a Strawberry Seed is 10 Coins. You therefore have more than sufficient money to plant Strawberries in four squares.

In order to gain more Experience immediately, you may opt to till more squares before you even go to Market.

Your first objective obviously is to harvest the Eggplant. You then should till a few more plots and go to the Market to buy seeds.

There is an advantage if you spend all of your Coins in your first farming effort as, when you run out of Coins, the game will give you a 'first-time user' bonus of 300 Coins as well as allowing you to reach at least Level 3 in your first session.

In the lower right corner of your Farmville screen, you will see six boxes with icons. At the outset, these six boxes represent fewer options than they will as your Level increases.

The first box is an arrow and this represents a multi-tool. It is the one that you use to move items or harvest Crops and other items, including Trees, Animals and Animal Barns that are 'ready'. As your Levels increase and more options are unlocked, you will be able to access a variety of choices here, including Multi-Tool, Move Tool and Recycle.

The second icon is a hoe, and obviously this is the tool to use in order to till plots on your field. The hoe must be used to create NEW squares of tilled soil, but you can use the multi-tool to re-till existing plots after harvest. When your Levels have increased, this option will be expanded to include Tractors and other Mechanised Ploughing objects.

The third icon represents a delete tool. You can delete tilled ground if you wish to put it to a different use. Items on the other hand should be sold instead of deleted if possible. When you reach Level 20 and unlock the Co-Op Option, the Delete Tool will be moved to the first Box and the third box will be designated for Co-Op Farming.

The fourth icon depicts a show ribbon and this is where your Awards will be displayed. When you reach Level 10, you will unlock Collections and this box will be shared between your Awards/Ribbons and your Collections. More of that later.

The fifth icon is the Market where you purchase items, including Seeds, Trees, Animals, Buildings, Decorations, Upgrades to your Farm and Vehicles.

The sixth and final box is your Inventory Gift Box, where Gifts that have been sent to you are kept until you either use or sell them.

The goals of the game itself are to generate more players and to persuade them to spend real money on virtual items. The goals of a player are to obtain as many upgrades and items as possible and preferably to do so without being forced to spend real money. The creators of any of these online games try to strike a happy balance between the two conflicting goals by allowing you to send and receive free gifts as well as rewarding you for your accomplishments on your farm. If you are going to spend real money on the game, do so judiciously by buying items that you cannot gain through other methods.

The greatest temptation to invest real money in the game probably is the availability of the Limited Edition items. These can be extremely attractive and they are marketed aggressively. Players who otherwise might not be inspired to pay $10.00 to Zynga to purchase a virtual building or decoration may do so in a sort of desperation when told that only a few hours remain before the Item no longer will be available.

Note that the purchase of any item, whether with Coins or with FarmVille Cash, will have a value in terms of raising Experience or XP. There are many advantages to the attainment of higher Levels, as new options are unlocked at specific Levels.

The Gift Option is at the very centre of any Facebook Game. It is the incentive that draws new players into the game and keeps existing players interested. In Farmville, as in most of the Games on Facebook, every player ostensibly has the option to send one Gift per Day to as many other Players or Friends as he/she wishes. In the case of Farmville, you actually may be able to send a Gift every eight Hours. Another section of this Guide deals with Gifts in some detail.

Time Limits for Crops

Farming in Farmville and other Facebook Farming Simulation Games is time-specific where Crops are concerned. Unlike Harvest Moon farming, Crops in Farmville are not season-specific, but there is a limited amount of time that they can be expected to survive once they are ready for harvest. There is a Limited Item in the form of the 'Unwither Ring' that when placed, will prevent your Crops from withering but the cost of this Limited Item is 250 Farm Cash, the equivalent of $40.00 and as a Limited Item, it is offered only a few Days before it disappears from the Menu at the Market. Although you may lose quite a few 'valuable' Crops in Farmville without the Unwither Ring when you are unable to log into Facebook to play the game, the cost of the item is rather steep. I certainly could not afford one initially, but there are ways to purchase an Unwither Ring for a lower price.

FarmVille often has sales for FarmVille Cash and a player who is determined to purchase an Unwither Ring should take advantage of one of these sales to purchase the FarmVille Cash needed for the Unwither Ring. In most cases, the Unwither Ring will not be available when you purchase the FarmVille Cash, but you can save the money for the time when it next appears in the Marketplace.

As previously indicated, Farming is not season-specific at all and some Crops are available on a permanent basis. Others are associated with special Limited Edition Themes and will be removed from the Market when the time period given to the Theme expires.

Currency in Farmville

An explanation of currency in general in Farmville and the prices at the Market may be useful at this point. There are two kinds of currency in the form of FarmVille Cash or FV Cash and Coins. Both can be earned through your actions in the game itself, but it is easier to earn Coins than Farm Cash.

You will earn Coins each time you harvest a Crop, Fruit Tree or Ranch Product. Farm Cash is earned ordinarily only when your Level increases. You will earn 1 Farm Cash for each increase in your Experience Level.

There are items at the Market that can be purchased solely with FV Cash. In some cases, especially if the Item is Farm-related, such as a Storage Building, the same item will be offered with a price in Farm Cash and a price in Coins but this is not often the case in Farmville and seldom the case where luxury items are concerned.

Most of the Limited Edition Buildings and Decorations can be purchased solely with FV Cash. It is FV Cash that provides a method for Zynga to make a pretty profit from their Free Game. Likewise, some of the Rare Animals can be purchased solely with FV Cash.

Some farm buildings can be purchased in skeletal form for a specific number of Coins or as finished buildings with Farm Cash. When purchased in skeletal form, you will be given a specific list of items that you must obtain in set quantities in order to construct the building.

In many cases, these construction projects will be given to you free of charge when you reach a specific Level in the game or when a new construction project is released. There are advantages for players who log into the game on a daily basis as they tend to be able to obtain many new buildings and Animals that are given free only on the first day of their release. After that, any Player who wants the building or Animal will be required to purchase it in the Marketplace.

For example, there are a number of buildings that can be used for storage of items as well as other buildings. Note that storage buildings such as Barns no longer are as vital as they were a year ago, since the release of the Storage Cellar which can be purchased for a very nominal fee and can be expanded to a point where it will store a total of 1000 items.

For the purposes of explaining construction projects, however, the example of the Limited Japanese Barn is as good as any. When available, a Player could buy the skeletal version of this Bar or the finished building. The prices were as follows:

Note that the Japanese Barn as a Limited Edition item that is not available currently. It is used simply as an example of a dual offering.

A Note about Storage

At the start of the game, you will not have an option to store items, apart from the items that NEVER have been removed from your Gift Box. Once you choose to 'Use' any Item, you may be unable to replace it in the Gift Box, although any Item that has not been placed should return to the Gift Box by default. It does not always work this way, however.. You therefore should be careful not to 'Use' items that cannot be placed on your Farm.

For example, although the Horse that you will be given as a Reward by Farmville fairly early in the game can be placed on your Farm even if you do not own a Stable, the Wandering Stallion cannot be accepted if you do not have a Stable to house him. A Stable in Farmville is one of the Buildings that must be purchased in skeletal form and then built.

Incidentally, there is an Award given by Farmville when you have a specific number of 'unique' items in your Gift Box. As one of the objects of the game is completion of all Goals such as Ribbons, you may wish to leave items that you do not need desperately in your Gift Box until you have won the Ribbon.

Shovels and Cellar

A fairly new option that exists in Farmville, and one welcomed by virtual packrats, is the Cellar. With nothing more than Shovels, you can dig yourself a Storage space underground. Shovels appear in the Free Gift Menu and can be sent to Neighbours and Friends. The underground storage differs a little from ordinary building projects and resembles special Limited Edition buildings in that the number of Shovels you have used will determine your rating vis-a-vis your Neighbours AND will allow you to obtain Gift Items that are rewards for specific totals.

As with many useful options, however, there is a Level Requirement to purchase a Storage Celler for 1 Coin. You must have reached Level 16 in order to begin the construction of a Cellar.

The potential capacity of the Storage Cellar has been increased to allow a total of 1000 items. Furthermore, stored items now are accessible at both farms and items can be moved from one farm to the other.

Ranch Animals

In Farmville, unlike Farm Town, another Facebook farming simulation game, you can harvest Ranch Products from Animals without housing them. You therefore can place any number of Cows, Sheep and Chickens and other Ranch Animals on your Farm without purchasing a Barn or Chicken Coop. There are advantages to the purchase of Ranch buildings, however. When any animal is unhoused, you must 'collect' from it individually. This is not a problem in the beginning but as your Level increases, you will find it very time-consuming. Farmhands are helpers that can be purchased or obtained as Rewards. Farmhands when used will harvest product from EVERY unhoused Animal on your farm instantly, but will not harvest from ranch buildings. There is a similar option in the form of Arbourists for Trees that are not collected in an Orchard.

Recently, the new Silo option has made it possible to harvest unique ingredients from Animals and Trees, including Manure Bags, Cherry Baskets and Wool.

Chickens and Chicken Coop

As far as a Chicken Coop is concerned, each Farm is limited to a single Coop but the purchase is very straightforward. The price is:

Chickens are one of the items that can be sent to Facebook Friends and Farmville Neighbours as a Free Gift. You are limited in the number of Gifts that you can send to a single individual in the course of one day. As a rule, you can send only one item to any person each day but there are some exceptions. Whether they are true exceptions or glitches are unknown but it often is possible to Accept a Gift and then send a Thank You Gift to an individual even if you previously sent him/her an item on the same day.

As soon as you can afford to do so, you should purchase a Chicken Coop. 20 Chickens can be housed in a Coop, but that is not the primary reason why you should have one. After all, you could allow your Chickens to roam freely throughout the Farm. The reason why you should invest in a Coop is linked to your Neighbours and their capacity to visit you to help you on your Farm.

Note that you can purchase and own only one Chicken Coop but there is an option to expand it.

The description of the Chicken Coop includes information about Mystery Eggs:

'Every now and then your chickens will lay Mystery Eggs. The more Chickens you have in your Coop, the more likely you are to find Mystery Eggs when you collect Eggs from your Coop everyday!

More Chickens of a particular colour means a higher chance of getting that Colour of Mystery Egg!

Be sure to check for Mystery Eggs every day!'

A Neighbour who feeds your Chickens during a visit to your Farm may be able to find a Mystery Egg while doing so. This in no way will lessen your own chances of finding a Mystery Egg when the Coop is ready for harvest.

Feeding a Neighbour's Chickens

Once each day, a Neighbour can visit and expect to obtain an option to fertilise your Field. Five bags of Fertiliser will appear on the left side of your screen. Click on a tilled square to fertilise it. When you have used all five of the bags, you may receive an option to feed your Neighbour's Chickens if he/she has a Chicken Coop. A bag of Chicken Feed will appear in the top left corner of your screen. When you click on it, the game will scroll to the location of the Chicken Coop.

Although you earn Coins when you help neighbours and sometimes ribbons and awards as well, one of the best reward potentially is an item known as a Mystery Egg. If, while feeding a Neighbour's Chickens, you find a Mystery Egg, it will be sent to your Gift Box. When you find it there, choose the option to 'Use' it. You then will be able to place it on your field in the same manner as you place any item. Click on it then to 'Open it'. Mystery Eggs can hatch Chickens, XP or Coins. They can hatch unusual and valuable Chickens apart from the ordinary White Chicken that you can receive or send as a Gift.

Advanced Tip for Mystery Eggs

For the Farmer at a low level, ordinary Chickens are a valuable asset and he/she should fill a Chicken Coop as quickly as possible with them. As levels increase, however, you may wish to sell all your ordinary Chickens and replace them with exotic types in order to be able to harvest the more valuable Mystery Eggs. With even one ordinary Chicken in a Coop, you have a chance of harvesting a simple White Mystery Egg.

The Need for Neighbours

Facebook was created for global social interactions and all Facebook games are created to promote this. Whenever you play any game on Facebook, you will be prompted again and again to invite friends to join you or, in the case of any Farming Simulation game, to become one of your Neighbours.

Neighbours can make a significant difference in the quality and even substance of the game. In Farmville, there are a number of options that will be unlocked only if you manage to obtain a specific number of Neighbours. There is nothing particularly sinister in this, although I would urge gamers not to spam all of their friends by inviting them to play Farmville. Try to send invitations only to friends that you believe actually might enjoy the game.

Although you can play Farmville in isolation, you will have more fun and a wider variety of experiences if you have Neighbours. You can invite any Facebook Friend to become your Neighbour and indeed, there always is an option to invite any Friend to participate in any Facebook game. Although I dearly would love to have more Neighbours, I personally am reluctant to bombard 'Friends' with invitations to join me in games on Facebook unless I feel they would enjoy the experience. I do have Friends who never would play a farming simulation game even at gunpoint. I would not annoy those friends with pointless invitations.

Facebook Games are very aggressive in their strategies to encourage you to obtain as many Neighbours as possible and Farmville is no exception. You can send one Gift every eight hours to any Facebook Friend, whether or not that individual is involved with Farmville. Accepting a Gift will make the person a part of Farmville. Are there any reasons why an individual should not accept a Gift or invitation? I do not believe there are any negative effects whatsoever. The game will not contact you without your permission. If you find that you do not care for it, you can ignore it forever. Ignoring a game or game request 'blocks' the game. If you tire of a game temporarily, you can block it. This has no permanent effects on your Farm or Assets and when the game is unblocked again, you should find everything in the same state as it was in the moment at which you blocked it.

Accepting an Invitation to play and to become a Friend's Neighbour can benefit your Friend enormously even if you never play the game at all. Certain significant options are unlocked only if you possess a specific number of Neighbours, are willing to invest real money in the game (or wait patiently for a long time while you increase your income through gameplay). Expanding your Farm and obtaining a Dairy Barn for your Cows are two options that require specific numbers of Neighbours. You can perform a kindness to any Facebook Friend simply by agreeing to try Farmville and accepting your Friend as your Neighbour.

When a player has Neighbours, he/she will be given the opportunity to visit their farms daily to perform little tasks and reap rewards. It is fun to see how other players have organised their Farms. Furthermore, when you are given a chance to feed a Neighbour's Chickens, you have the opportunity of finding a Mystery Egg. Mystery Eggs can hatch into rare and valuable Chickens or give you XP or Coins. It is one of the most delightful rewards of visiting Neighbours. You may find a Mystery Egg if you have your own Chicken Coop and collect the Eggs that your Chickens have laid, but the type of Mystery Egg that can be generated is based on the varieties of Chickens that are living in the Coop. The fact of the matter is that players who have high levels of experience are more likely to have rare Chickens in their Chicken Coops. It therefore is very much worth your while to visit all your Neighbours regularly to feed their Chickens.

As previously discussed, there are two requirements for the option to feed a Neighbour's Chickens.

First of all, the Neighbour MUST have at least 5 tilled squares of land that have not been fertilised as the first option that is generated by the game is that of helping your Neighbour by fertilising five of his/her Crops. The game accepts an empty tilled square for this purpose so a good Neighbour always should till as many squares as possible, even if he/she does not have time to plant Seeds.

Once you have fertilised five squares, the option to Feed the Chickens will appear, but only if your Neighbour has a Chicken Coop. I advise all players to invest in a Chicken Coop as early as possible in the game so that they can participate in the Mystery Egg option and allow their Neighbours to participate.

There are Level Requirements as well for every action to be performed on a Neighbour's Farm. For example, if a Neighbour has a Flower Stall filled with Flowers he/she is willing to 'Share', you will only obtain the option to take Flowers if you have reached Level 12. If your Neighbour has a Market Stall where a specific Crop is being 'Shared', you will obtain the option to take the Crop only if you have reached Level 15. Your own efforts to play the game therefore will enhance your ability to benefit from your Neighbours' efforts.

Sometimes, when you visit a Neighbour, you will be given a little task to perform even before you are asked to fertilise the Crops. The task can be performed instantly and will result in a reward in the form of Coins. Unlike Animal Crossing, where you must pull up the Weeds on the land physically, one by one, in Farmville, any request to weed your Neighbour's land or chase away Raccoons is performed painlessly and instantly with a single click of the mouse.

Even if you have not obtained a specific Friend as a Neighbour in Farmville, the game will consider any Friend who has played Farmville as a potential Neighbour and will give you the option to visit him/her in order to perform these tasks. If you are looking for Neighbours, you are ore likely to have success in an invitation to some one who currently plays the game than some one who never explored it.

When you have Neighbours, provided always that they are willing to 'share' and 'publish' their Farmville accomplishments, you will be given a chance to obtain bonuses from them. The bonuses that you gain in this fashion usually are not large sums but every coin counts.

Invitations Posted to a Facebook User's Wall

You can invite a Friend to become your Neighbour in a couple of different ways. You can send the individual a Gift, which will alert the person to the fact that you are a player of Farmville. This is the least aggressive method. The second is to send an invitation to become your Neighbour. The Invitation when sent in this fashion will go into the Friend's list of Requests.

The most aggressive 'in your face' way of asking a Friend to become your Neighbour is by allowing Farmville to post a Request on his/her Wall. Farmville periodically will choose Friends at random and give you a prompt asking if you wish to post the Request to the person's Wall. Many people would find such a Post rather annoying, even embarrassing. I would not recommend it unless the Friend in question is very open about the games he/she plays. There are quite a few Facebook users who play games but who would rather not advertise the fact!

Lost Animals

One of the better options shared by Neighbours is the ability to adopt 'Lost Animals'. While playing Farmville, the game may announce that a Lost Animal has wandered onto your farm. You will not be able to adopt this Animal yourself, but you can post the information on your Wall to give your Friends and Neighbours the option to adopt it. Lost Animals tend to be varieties that you cannot purchase at the Market. They include Llamas, Black Sheep, Ducks and odd varieties of ordinary Animals such as Groovy Cows and Party Ducks. You can collect Ranch Products from a Groovy Cow or Party Duck and a Dairy Barn will house a Groovy Cow or Pink Cow as easily as it houses ordinary Cows. It therefore always is a good idea to adopt a Lost Animal when you see an opportunity to do so.

There are a couple of Animals similar to the Lost Animals that have specific uses in terms of Breeding. These are the Bull and the Wandering Stallion.

A Bull, like any Lost Animal will appear on a Farm with a prompt to help it find a home by posting a message on your Wall. You cannot adopt the Bull who appears on your own Farm, but must wait to see a notice on another player's Wall.

You can adopt a Bull even if you do not have a Dairy Barn, but you will not be able to use him for breeding. It is only if you have a Dairy Barn for your Cows that you will be able to introduce a Bull and possibly obtain Calves when you 'harvest' the Barn.

When you adopt a Bull, you will receive a prompt that is a hint as to future rewards:

You adopted the Bull! Special things will happen if you put him in the dairy barn.

The Wandering Stallion is similar to the Bull in the effect that he can have on your Horses but he is a transient visitor at best and cannot even visit your Farm if you do not have a finished Stable. If you have a finished Stable, he will spend the night at least and will leave a reward of some kind. It may be a Foal or it may be some Coins.

Foals and Calves

Most players will have the opportunity to obtain a Bull or even more than one Bull as a 'Lost Animal' or when offered for a limited time as a Free Gift. The Wandering Stallion, on the other hand, is an option that appears randomly. I have found that if one logs into Farmville and remains idle for a quarter of an hour, a Wandering Stallion may appear. I never have experienced the option unless I have remained idle for a quarter to half an hour. When posted to a Player's Wall, at least five other Players can give the Wandering Stallion shelter by clicking on the post. The presence of a Wandering Stallion or any Stallion in a Stable is the only chance of obtaining a baby Animal.

As with Mystery Eggs, a Player who desires to breed a rare type of Horse or Pony should remove all ordinary Horses and Ponies from his/her Stable and keep only the exotic varieties. Ordinary Horses or Ponies can be kept on the farm outside the Stable or stored.

When the harvest of a Stable produces a Foal, the Player is given the chance to post the offer of the Foal on his/her Wall. Five players can take a Foal from one offer. Unfortunately, the Player who actually harvests the Stable will not obtain a Foal!

In terms of Calves, the same rules apply. If an ordinary Cow is in a Dairy Farm, any Harvest of that Barn, provided a Bull is present, can produce an ordinary Calf. If a Player wishes to produce exotics, he/she should remove all the ordinary Cows from the Dairy Barn.

The Nursery Barn

The Nursery Barn is a construction project that allows one to grow baby Calves and Foals into adult Animals. It will house ONLY Foals and Calves but it will house both. When harvested, there is a chance that one of the tenants will mature into an adult. When this occurs, the Adult Animal will be found in your Gift Box and you will have an opportunity to post the offer of a baby animal of the same type on your Wall.

Note that exotic Animals can be placed in a Nursery Barn but, for the most part, WILL MATURE INTO ORDINARY ADULT ANIMALS. This is a very important fact as most Players would be very disappointed to discover that an Exotic Foal or Calf had matured into an ordinary Cow or Horse. To discover whether or not a specific type of baby Animal will mature into the same variety of Animal, you must place it in the Nursery Barn temporarily, then run your cursor over the icon of the Animal. The type of Animal it would become when mature will be displayed. If the baby Animal will not keep its identity, you then can remove it immediately from the Nursery Barn.

Basically, therefore, the only way to obtain an Exotic Horse or Cow is by purchasing it in the Marketplace. Exotic adult Horses and Cows can be bred and the babies shared with Neighbours, but in most cases, players will not be able to grow them into Exotic Adults.

Sometimes, an Exotic Horse or Cow is offered as a Reward for completing a Request. Farmville is fairly generous with Quest Rewards and players should take advantage of every Quest that appears.

Gift Exchanges

Another significant benefit of having Neighbours, apart from the Lost Animals they advertise or the ability to help on their farms is the ability to exchange Gifts on a daily basis. Officially, one free Gift can be sent to any Friend each day but the time period that must occur between Gifts usually is more like three hours. When you choose this option, you will be taken to a special Menu that lists the items that can be sent as Gifts. Here, your own Level of experience will dictate the Gifts that have been unlocked. Some Gifts are more useful than others. If you wish to help a Friend who is starting a farm, you probably should choose to send Animals or Fruit Trees rather than decorations. By accepting a Gift, a new player can obtain items he/she otherwise could not be eligible to have in terms of his/her own level of experience.

Mystery Gifts are an interesting option for advanced players in that they can contain a wide variety of items, including XP, Farm Cash, Fuel or items that can be unlocked only at high levels of experience. When you receive a Mystery Gift, you will find it in your Gift Box. Choose the 'Use' option, then drag it to the ground anywhere on your Farm. Click on it to open it in the same manner in which you would open a Mystery Egg.

Note that the Gift Box is designated as 'full' when it contains a total of 500 Items. Although you can continue to receive Items when you have more than 500 in the Gift Box, you no longer will be able to open Mystery Eggs, Mystery Boxes or use Darts for the Mystery Game until you reduce the number to 499.

Facebook Games generally are based on the concept of sharing and this is a positive social attribute. Even if the items are virtual rather than real, the idea of sending a Gift that a Friend may want or need for his/her farm is a method of outreach and communication. It may be partly selfish in that the Gift always is accompanied by a message requesting a Gift in return, but even so...

Neighbour Requirements

Two of the options in Farmville that are linked to the number of Neighbours you have are the ability to expand your farm and the ability to purchase a Dairy Barn.

20 FV Cash or FarmVille Cash is more difficult to obtain than 500 Coins. Each Level that you advance may be worth 1 FV Cash but the primary method of obtaining FarmVille Cash is by purchasing it with real money.

Note that the Dairy Farm is one of the few structures for housing Animals that is not limited to one per farm. You can place multiple Dairy Farms on either farm and, provided you have a Bull for each, harvest both coins and baby Calves from all of them.

5 FarmVille Cash therefore is worth $5.00 and 1500 Coins are the equivalent of 1 FarmVille Cash. The actual prices of the Dairy Barn in both cases are equal but you usually can earn 5000 Coins faster than you can earn even 1 FV Cash. It therefore is to your benefit to obtain at least 8 Neighbours as quickly as possible in order to be able to house your Cows. Cows take quite a lot of space on your Farm if you do not have a Barn for them, although you can collect Milk from them individually in the same way that you can collect Eggs from Chickens individually. The 'Eggs' collected from Chickens individually are nothing more than a Coin value and are not Mystery Eggs. Mystery Eggs can be obtained solely from a Chicken Coop.

Basic Farming Strategies

Basic Farming Strategies in most of the Farming Simulation Games on Facebook are similar. Your primary goals are an increase in income and an increase in your Experience levels.

Experience Points in Farmville where Farming itself is concerned ordinarily will amount to 1 XP or 2 XP per Crop.

Whenever you plough a new square of soil, you pay 15 Coins and earn 1 XP. Whenever you clear Withered Crops from any Square, you will pay +15 Coins and earn +1 Experience.

Whenever you plant a Crop, you pay 10 Coins to do so, but will earn either 1 XP or 2 XP depending on the Crop itself.

Whenever you harvest a Crop, you will earn NO XP but you will earn 1 Mastery point for any Crop that can be Mastered as well as the selling value of the Crop. Whenever you purchase any Crop at the Market, the selling value, growth period, XP Gain and the Cost of the Seeds is given.

The trick always is to organise your efforts to coincide with your real-life schedule. In console farming games like Harvest Moon, you can play your game whenever you wish and time will stand still during your absence. Online games, especially those created for venues such as Facebook operate in real time and require your attention in real time.

Crops in Farmville, once they ripen and are ready for harvest will last only a limited time before withering. The grace period during which they will remain fresh on the vine as it were is equal to the growth period. In other words, Crops with brief growing periods will wither faster than those that take a few days to mature. If you plant a Crop that takes only 4 Hours to mature, you must harvest it within four hours once it ripens. If you wish to make speedy progress in Farmville, planting and harvesting Crops that take only a few hours to ripen will raise your Levels fastest and give you quick profits but only if you remember to harvest the Crops in time!

As far as XP Gain is concerned, the Crops that take less than a day to mature usually only give 1 XP. There are a few exceptions, however, and those that give 2 XP

The Limited Edition Crop, Swiss Chard, for example, takes 14 hours to ripen but gives 2 XP. Ordinary Crops such as Peanuts that take 16 Hours to mature only give 1 XP. In fact, you will find that the benefit of growing Limited Edition Crops often is the better XP value of these Crops.

XP points can be obtained when a Neighbour 'shares' an Award or accomplishment on his/her Wall. Installing the Zynga Toolbar allows you instant access to the Game Feed that includes all of the messages about Farmville that are published by your Neighbours on their Walls.

There are many glitches and problems with Farmville, however, and the Toolbar, which ought to give you instant access to your Game, any Bonuses you have earned and the Game Feed, does not always function properly if at all! Nonetheless, the game is interesting enough to keep playing.

Unwithering Crops

If your Crops wither, there are a couple of ways in which to restore them.

One is by purchasing 3 Unwithers for 30 Farm Cash from the Market. The Unwithers are found in the Upgrade section of the Market Menu.

For 30 Farm Cash, you can acquire 3 Unwithers, each of which will Unwither your entire Farm or a Neighbour's entire Farm three times. For 30 Farm Cash, you could buy a host of other Items that are far more useful, permanent and valuable, so I do not recommend this investment at all!

In fact, if you visit a Neighbour's Farm and find that ALL his/her Crops have withered, the game often will offer you a FREE chance to Unwither all of his/her Crops. If, therefore, you planted a large quantity of valuable Crops and somehow missed the deadline for harvesting them successfully, try to persuade a Neighbour to visit your Farm to see if he/she obtains the free option to restore your Crops to life.

The default offer when you visit a Neighbour usually is to fertilise 5 Crops and then to feed the Chickens in the Chicken Coop. When only some Crops have withered on a Neighbour's Farm, you still will be able to fertilise the Crops that are growing currently so it is possible that the Unwither Option cannot be triggered unless EVERY Crop has withered..

Limited Items

Limited Items, including Seeds, are Limited for purchase to the ttime period during which they will be available for purchase. Where items such as Buildings, Decorations and Trees are concerned, you will have access to them forever once purchased. Crop Seeds, however, usually must be used immediately so you will need to plant Limited Crops before they disappear from the Menu. Limited Items can have specific Level Requirements as well.

There are a few Limited Edition Crops that are different in this respect. In some cases, a Quest or a Gift from a Neighbour will give you a specific number of Seeds of a Limited Edition Crop. If this is the case, a Player will have access to the Seeds until he/she uses the total number even when these Seeds no longer are available to other players.

Free Gifts List

Free Gifts may represent the arteries of the System where any Facebook game is concerned as they are the conduit through which the makers of the game can persuade players to advertise it to others. Free Gifts can include desirable items that cannot be obtained by any other method, giving players another incentive to share their gaming experience with their Friends.

There are two fundamental categories where Free Gifts are concerned. The first are Gifts that appear according to a set cycle. These will be listed first in the Gift Menu. They include Items for Limited Events/Contests such as the Tuscan Wedding, Building Materials and Collectibles.

The second category are items that always appear in the Gift Menu but are unlocked at specific Levels.

The 'permanent' items, with their Categories, include, with some exceptions:

Some of these Gifts are available to all Players at Level 1. Others must be unlocked by reaching a specific Level. A Player often can receive a Gift Item he/she has not unlocked but will not be able to send it as a 'Thank You Gift' to the Player who sent it originally.

Mystery Gifts

A Mystery Gift is a Free Gift that, when opened on your Farm, will prove to contain an Item that can range from Coins, to XP or rare Items that may or may not be available in the Market.

A Mystery Gift may appear to be a good option when sending a Free Gift to a player at a higher level as he/she probably will have all the ordinary Items in the Free Gift List that would be most useful to a beginner, such as Ranch Animals and Fruit Trees. Unfortunately, many Players at high levels have large inventories and do not welcome yet another Tree or Animal. It always is best to ask your Neighbours which Gifts they prefer, but if you cannot do that, send Items that always are useful, such as Watering Cans or Special Delivery Boxes.

Resale Value of Gift, Reward and Lost Animals

Lost Animals tend to be unique varieties of Animals. In some cases, they are a sub-variety of an ordinary Animal, such as the Party Duck or the Groovy Cow. In other cases, they are unusual Animals such as Llamas.

When you reach a new Level or win a Ribbon or Award, a Gift sometimes is placed in your Gift Box to celebrate the accomplishment. These items are linked to the actual Level or Award, unlike the Lost Animals which are a random Event. The resale value of some of the Gifts, Rewards and Lost Animals are as follows:

Animals in Farmville fall into one of three general Categories. The first could be considered as Ranch Animals, but this Category would include Exotic Animals and any species that yields a product or income regularly. The second Category is that of Pets, and this definition in Farmville includes only those Animals who yield neither product nor income. Various breeds of Dogs tend to be the only Animals in the Pet Category. Other Animals that would be Pets in the real world, including Cats, should be defined in Farmville as Ranch Animals as a Cat yields a regular income whenever he/she is Brushed. The third Category would be Decorations. Although most Animals would not be defined as Decorations, the Carrier Pigeons would fall into the third Category as, although alive and indeed more mobile than most other Animals as they will fly without being prompted to do so, they do not yield Product, nor are they classified by the game as Pets.

Let me hasten to declare here that Farmville appears to be strictly vegetarian in nature, unlike some Facebook Farming Simulation Games that force a player to fatten specific Animals for slaughter. If, therefore, a player is a vegetarian, Vegan or Buddhist, he/she should have no moral qualms where Farmville Farming is concerned.

Ranch Animals, if they do not yield any specific Product, yield income through the act of interacting with them by Brushing them. Baby Animals, including Calves and Colts, will not yield Product but do yield income if you Brush them. Brushing follows a specific cycle in terms of time in the same fashion as any collection of Ranch Products.

As of July 2011, some Animals DO yield products when harvested. Wool can be obtained from Sheep, for example, Milk Jugs from Cows and Manure Bags from Horses and Pigs. These Items can be used in the Workshop.

In the Animal List, I have included both the Yield of the Animal and the price of the Animal if sold. Where very common Animals are concerned, the two often are equal, but in most cases, the value of the Animal itself is greater than the value of its Yield. Special Limited Editions are listed in a separate Category, as they will not be available after the time period for their Edition elapses.

Housing for Animals

There is a large selection of Buildings in Farmville. Some are Limited Editions but others are listed without restrictions in terms of time. Buildings can be ornamental or have specific uses. In general, the Buildings categorised as houses or homes are decorative in nature. Your Character cannot interact with them except to move them or sell them.

Other Buildings either are used for Farming, Animal Housing, Crafting or Storage. In some cases, ownership of a Building with a defined use will unlock new options in terms of gameplay.

An early case in point is the Chicken Coop which allows the game to generate Mystery Eggs randomly based on the types of Chickens that are housed within. It is for this reason that I advise players to purchase a Chicken Coop as early as possible in the game.

Dairy Barn Housing for Cows

The Dairy Barn serves as housing for any Cow in Farmville. Moreover, it will house one Bull as well. Bulls will not appear on the Menu at the Market and are Lost Animals that must be claimed. If you place a Bull in your Dairy Barn with your Cows, you can obtain valuable Bonuses, including Calves. The prices of the Dairy Barn are given in another section of this Guide. You are limited to one Bull per Barn.

When you 'harvest' the Dairy Barn after a Bull has been introduced, you may find a Calf has been born. You will be alerted as follows:

Congratulations! A Baby Calf is born! This little critter is already eager to explore the world on its own.

Ask your friends to help?

If you agree to 'Share' the information, any one with access to your Wall can adopt the Calf. Calves cannot be housed in a Dairy Barn, but need their own Nursery Barn.

Nursery Barn

A Nursery Barn can house both Calves and Foals. If you do not have a Nursery Barn, any and all Calves and Foals that you own will be doomed to eternal childhood and you will be doomed to brush each of them individually to collect any rewards.

A Nursery Barn when purchased at the Market is a skeletal form, much like the Stable. You will need the following Materials to complete the Nursery Barn:

10 Boards
10 Nails
10 Bottles
10 Blankets

As with the Stable, there is no option to click on a button to 'Complete' the Barn instantly. You can purchase the Materials one by one, however, if you are impatient or receive them as Gifts from Neighbours if you can persuade yourself to wait.

When you have a completed Nursery Barn, you will have a chance of obtaining an adult Animal from it when you harvest it. Whenever an Animal attains adulthood in your Nursery Barn, you will have an option to share a baby Animal of the same variety with your Neighbours.

Note that an Animal who has achieved adulthood will diminish the number of baby Animals in your Nursery Barn by one.

As previously discussed, it is unadvisable to place any Exotic Calf or Foal in a Nursery Barn if you would prefer that it retain its exotic nature. In most cases, Exotic Calves and Foals will mature into quite ordinary Horses, Ponies and Cows.

To discover whether or not a specific type of baby Animal will mature into the same variety of Animal, you must place it in the Nursery Barn temporarily, then run your cursor over the icon of the Animal. The type of Animal it would become when mature will be displayed. If the baby Animal will not keep its identity, you then can remove it immediately from the Nursery Barn.

Basically, therefore, the only way to obtain an Exotic Horse or Cow is by purchasing it in the Marketplace. Exotic adult Horses and Cows can be bred and the babies shared with Neighbours, but in most cases, players will not be able to grow them into Exotic Adults.

Stable Housing for Horses

Unlike the Chicken Coop and Dairy Barn, a Stable when purchased is unfinished. You are obliged to purchase the skeletal outline of the Building and then to collect the Materials necessary to complete it. There is no option to 'Complete' the Stable instantly by purchasing all required Materials at once, but you can purchase them one by one if you wish. Most players prefer to obtain the Materials as Gifts from their Neighbours.

The price of the Horse Stable (unfinished) is:

Each of these Items costs 1 Farm Cash, which means that, should you choose the 'Complete' Option to finish the Barn immediately by purchasing all Materials from Farmville, the total Cost for Materials would be:

Note that the Option to Complete the Barn will be available until you have collected all Materials, which means that you can choose to activate it at any point.

The primary reason to own a finished Stable is in order to be able to collect the wandering Stallion. As with the Bulls, the Stallion is a random 'Lost Animal' generated by Farmville, but unlike the Bull who can be kept outside if you do not own a Dairy Barn, you will not be able to place the Stallion if you do not have a finished Stable. As a matter of fact, you will not be allowed to 'Help' the Stallion by bringing it to your Farm unless you have a completed Stable.

If you have an unfinished Stable, the game may offer to give you some Materials,but I never actually received any.

Even if you do have a Stable, the Stalliion will move on after a few days to wander towards other fertile fields. He is unique in this respect.

Farmville's Description of the Stable is:

If you have given the Wandering Stallion shelter for the night (or if you have a stallion in your stable), there is a chance your horses will produce a foal.

Having more horses of a particular type means a higher chance of finding a foal of that type!

You also have a chance of finding a useful item when you tend to your stables so make sure to check every day!

Tip: If you have any Exotic Horses, remove all ordinary Horses and Ponies from your Stable before you house any Stallion as you then will have a better chance of obtaining an Exotic Foal.

Storage Buildings

Barns, if not described for a specific purpose, tend to be Storage Buildings. Very often, Limited Edition Barns will be offered as part of a Theme. The Japanese Barn is one such Storage Building.

Game Description of Bamboo:

Bamboo is used to build a Japanese Barn. You need a total of 10 Bamboo in order to build a Japanese Barn, along with 10 of each of the other components. You can get Bamboo as gifts or from the Market. Reed Thatch is used to build a Japanese Barn. You need a total of 10 Reed Thatch in order to build a Japanese Barn, along with 10 of each of the other components.

The complete list of items for the Japanese Barn are as follows:

The 'other components' are basic Construction Materials that are used for any building project. If you are involved in the construction of more than one Building, whenever you receive any item that is a basic component, you will have a choice as to where to apply it.

If you wish to learn how close you are to completion, click on the Barn and choose: 'look inside'. A Menu will appear, showing how many of each item you have collected with options to buy or ask for more from friends. The last option in the menu for the Japanese Barn allows you to 'Complete Now' by purchasing all remaining items required outright. This option does not exist with respect to a Nursery Barn or Stable, although you can purchase each Item required one by one.

Each of these Items costs 1 Farm Cash, which means that, should you choose the 'Complete' Option to finish the Barn immediately by purchasing all Materials from Farmville, the total Cost for Materials would be:

50 Farm Cash

Note that the Option to Complete the Barn will be available until you have collected all Materials, which means that you can choose to activate it at any point. The Option to 'Complete Now' only appears to exist with respect to Limited Edition Buildings such as the Japanese Barn and the Beehive, probably because some of the Materials for Limited Edition Buildings are exclusive to THAT construction project.

N.B. The Japanese Barn and indeed, the Japanese Collection no longer is available and is used merely as an example here.

Special Delivery Crates

A new Free Gift was introduced in the latter half of 2010 in the form of the Special Delivery. Originally, this item was not available in the regular Free Gifts menu but it now does appear there. A Special Delivery is akin to a Mystery Gift but contains construction materials instead of other Items. It can contain any Construction Material for a Building as well as Shovels, Bees and Watering Cans. It therefore is far simpler to help Neighbours with their Construction projects than it was a year ago. Rather than being forced to choose a specific Item to send, you can send a Special Delivery and let the player open it when he/she needs construction materials for any project.

The Special Delivery crate option has been simplified as well to allow a player to choose a specific total to open instantly rather than being obliged to open the crates one by one.

New Options at Level 10

At Level 10, you will receive some new options to make Farmville more interesting. One of these is Crop Mastery and the other is Collections.

Here is the description in the prompt that you will receive when you reach Level 10:

You've just unlocked Crop Mastery! Now Harvesting a Crop will earn you a point towards that crop's mastery level.

Master each of a crop's 3 levels for a special bonus!

You can now find Collectibles while plowing, harvesting, fertilising, and gifting. Find all the collectibles in a SET and turn it in for a reward!

Collections

At Level 10, the Menu Box that displays the Icon of a Blue Ribbon will offer two different Menus. The first will be the Award/Ribbons Menu and the second will be the Collections Menu.

The Game information about Collections states that:

Find collectibles while Ploughing, Harvesting Trees and Animals and Fertilising Friends' Crops. Get Hints for where to find each collectible by mousing over its icon!

If you are lucky enough to find a Rare or Uncommon Collectible, you can share it with your friends!

Some collectibles can only be found from Gifts sent from your friends. Check back every day for new giftable collectibles!

When you find all Collectibles in a Set, you can turn it in for a reward of XP, Coins and Fuel!

Collections are divided into a number of different Sets. Each Set consists of 6 Items. Whenever you find an Item, you can publish the news to allow three of your Friends to 'collect' the same Item from your Wall. Whenever you complete a Collection Set, you will receive a Bonus and if you publish the news, your Friends can receive a Bonus as well. The Collection Sets originally were as follows:

Bugs Collection
Butterfly Collection
Feather Collection

The Collection sets now have been revised and are more varied.

Items in Collections tend to be linked to specific activities, based on fairly logical 'real' considerations. Bugs, for example, tend to be found when you harvest Fruit from Trees.

Crop Mastery

Crop Mastery is based on the number of Crops that you harvest. In some cases, you must achieve Mastery of a specific Crop in order to unlock a Crop at a higher Level. For example, White Roses cannot be unlocked unless you have full 3 Star Mastery of Pink Roses.

One Mastery Point towards a specific Crop is obtained whenever you harvest that Crop. You can increase the number of points by 'using' a Bushel from your Market Stall. See the section that deals with Market Stalls for details.

Mastery of Trees was introduced with the Orchard. With the introduction of Sheep and Pig Breeding, Mastery Levels in terms of Breeding was added to the game.

The Farmer's Market

At some point in the early stages of your game, you may see the icon of a Bushel of the Crop you are harvesting float across your screen. When you reach Level 15 and this occurs, the game will prompt you to purchase a Market Stall. Without knowing what the purpose of this item is, you may ignore the prompt.

In fact, the Market Stall option is quite interesting and it can be profitable both in terms of income and experience.

A Market Stall can be purchased either with Coins or with Farm Cash.

The prices of a Market Stall are as follows:

A total of 5 Market Stalls can be purchased for each Farm, but additional Market Stall purchases with Coins, after the first, depend on the number of Neighbours that one has.

The Farmer's Market

You will not be able to purchase your own Market Stall until you reach Level 15, nor will you be able to accept Bushels from other players until then.

Once you purchase a Market Stall, you can access the Farmer's Market through the Stall itself.

The little tutorial that can be accessed at the Market Stall gives the following information:

Each time you harvest a crop, you might find a bushel of that crop. When you find them, you get extra bushels for crop mastery! Crop bushes are used to speed up your mastery or XP progress, to unlock seeds that you can't yet buy in the market and to craft items in your Crafting Cottage. Coming soon!

Bushels you find are stored in your Market Stall. You can spend your bushels to boost your productivity on the farm! First click your Market Stall and select Farmer's Market, then click the 'My Bushels' Button, and then click the 'Use' button under the Bushel.

When you harvest a bushel, your market stall is set to sell those bushels for 24 hours. If you've mastered the crop, your stall will stay open longer. If you're already selling the crop, finding another Bushel will keep your stall open longer, too.

From your own Market Stall, you can see the Bushels your friends are offering. You can take up to 3 bushels from each friend. Just click the 'Get Bushels' button and start shopping!

In order to 'Use' the Bushel, you need to be growing the specific Crop and it needs to be ready for Harvest within two hours. Otherwise, there will be no effect whatsoever
Market Stalls are used both to store Bushels of specific Crops and to offer them to visiting Neighbours. If any Neighbour takes Bushels from your Stall, you will be rewarded. You can choose the form your Reward takes. You will be offered 10 XP, 4000 Coins or 15 Fuel. (?) Whenever you harvest a Bushel of a specific Crop, it automatically will go into your Market Stall and the Stall will open for business for 24 hours. There are ways to extend the time that the Stall remains open, but 24 hours is the normal time period.

Whenever you click on your Market Stall, you will have an option to access the Farmer's Market. Here you will be given the opportunity to see all the Bushels that your neighbours currently are offering. You can take three Bushels of any specific Crop from a Neighbour's Stall.

These Bushels can be used or shared with Neighbours. If you opt to 'Use' a Bushel that you have collected, you need to be able to harvest the same Crop on your own Farm within two hours in order to gain the benefit which is an increase in the Experience earned from the act of Harvesting that Crop. For example, if you choose to 'Use' a Bushel of Rice, you need to have Rice that will ripen within the next two hours and be able to harvest it before the time limit expires. Rice ordinarily gives +1 XP. If a Bushel of Rice is in use, however, each Rice square that you harvest will give you +2 XP.

Only one Bushel can be in use at any given point in time. If you have Bushels for more than one Crop that is ready to be harvested, you can use the corresponding Bushels sequentially.

If you have not reached Level 15 and attempt to collect a Bushel from a Friend's Wall, you will receive the following prompt:

Sorry! You need to get to Level 15 before you can visit a Farmer's Market and collect bushels! Would you like 20 XP from Farmville to help you on your way?

You therefore can claim a little reward of 20 XP even if you cannot collect the Bushel posted on a Neighbour's or Friend's Wall.

Tip: If you harvest your first Bushel before you purchase any Market Stall, your first Market Stall will be given to you free.

Garden Shed

The Garden Shed gives you the opportunity to save Flowers that you harvest to use as Decorations on your own land. If you love beautiful Flowers, you will enjoy this option tremendously. Unfortunately, the price is steep unless you have 10 Neighbours. There are no Level Requirements for purchase of a Garden Shed, incidentally.

The Garden Shed is described as follows:

Garden Sheds save Perfect Bunches hat you find while harvesting flowers. Use them to make decorative flower bouquets to put around your farm or share with friends! Your first Garden Shed comes with 10 rare bouquets as a special purchase gift!

The Garden Shed is a Building Item with two separate listings and prices:

Originally, the storage capacity for the Garden Shed was 30 Bouquets but that has been increased recently to 100. There are financial rewards if you beautify your Farm by placing Bouquets on your land in the form of Awards.

The Co-Op Option

The Co-Op Job is another advanced Option unlocked at Level 20. The third box at the lower left corner of your screen will change from the Delete Tool to Co-Op Farming.

Co-Op Guide

A job is a task that involved seeding and harvesting a number of the specified crop within the time frame stated in the job. There are three levels of rewards in a job: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Medal rewards are based on how fast you complete the job, and give even more coins and XP. Gold is the most difficult of all but gives all participants a unique reward item.

To help on a job, find a job on the 'All Jobs' List. You must be friends with the job initiator, not already be on another job and the job must not be full in order to join.

If for some reason you want to leave a job, you can select 'Quit Job' at any item. If you signed on as a helper, your contributions will remain but you won't get a reward when the job is complete. If you are an initiator, you can only quit a job if there are no others helping.

Walkthrough: Preparing for Level 25

As soon as you reach Level 25 in Farmville, you will be offered your choice between three Crafting Buildings, which either could be perceived as small factories or cottage industries. The three that are offered are: Spa, Winery and Bakery.

You will have been given a Market Stall long before you reach the point where you actually can USE the Bushels that you obtain when harvesting Crops. As you can store 100 Bushels, however, there is no reason why you cannot prepare for the moment when you launch your business at level 25 by deciding in advance which Craft to choose.

Note here that the Tractor will be unlocked at Level 12, the Harvester at Level 13 and the Seeder at Level 14. These vehicles will allow you to till the land, plant Seeds and harvest them much faster than before, as with any basic Farm Vehicle, you will be able to work four plots at a time.

To upgrade any Vehicle, you need to construct a Garage. Garages are unlocked only when you reach Level 22, but the basic Farming Vehicles should be sufficient until then.

It is at Level 20 that the Co-Op Jobs Option is unlocked, allowing you to join other Players to band together to produce specific totals of one or more Crops to satisfy a requirement for an imaginary customer.

Co-Op Jobs give you a number of rewards, including Coins and XP as well as adding to your Mastery of the Crops that you produce in the course of the job.

Gaining Mastery of Crops increases your chance of finding Bushels whenever you harvest those Crops. Bushels are what you need to complete Recipes when you reach Level 25 and choose your Craft.

With that in mind, knowing what Recipes will be available for each and the required ingredients may help immensely.

At each Craft, three Recipes will be available at Level 1. When you choose the Craft, the game will give you the necessary ingredients to prepare one item. At Level 1, you will have two 'tables' or slots where Items can be prepared.

Each time you increase the level of the Crafting Building, Slots or Tables will be added.

Tips and Tricks for Co-Op Jobs

This list of 'things to do' is useful not only when you are part of an active Co-Op Job but whenever your Farm has the ability to trade Bushels at a Market Stall or more than one Market Stall.

First of all, it always is beneficial to have a Neighbour who is willing to work as an unofficial partner to grow Crops that you need for your chosen Craft. Unfortunately, you are limited to three Bushels from any specific Neighbour's Market Stalls, but you can choose Bushels from more than one Crop or all three from a single Crop. There is a little trick to this if you have a Neighbour with the same Craft that you have. When you have chosen three Bushels from any Neighbour's Market, you have the option to 'Share' a Bushel of the same type as the one chosen last. If you have taken more than one type of Bushel, always save the one that your Neighbour needs as the last to take, so that you will be able to Share one of those with him/her.

Before you begin to take Bushels from Neighbours or the Game Feed, look at your own inventory to make certain that you have sufficient space to store them. You are restricted to 100 Bushels irrespective of the number of Market Stalls that you own. You are limited to five Market Stalls, moreover. Whenever you find a Bushel for any Crop, it automatically will be displayed at one of your Market Stalls, unless all of them are displaying a different Crop. You therefore need to make certain that you have a Closed Market Stall or one that offers the same Crop BEFORE you begin to harvest any Crops, especially if the Crops you are going to harvest are a variety that you or your Neighbour needs. If necessary, shut a Market Stall in order to give yourself a venue for the Crop you are about to Harvest.

The next step to take BEFORE you harvest any Crop is to go to your Bushel inventory (accessed either through any of your Market Stalls or through your Crafting Building) to 'Use' a Bushel of the same Crop so that you will earn more Mastery points for that Crop.

The following appear to increase your chances of obtaining Bushels when you harvest your Crops:

1. Fertilisation
You can fertilise your own Crops using 'Fertilise All', a wonderful reward given randomly when you visit your Neighbours' farms or you can ask Friends and Neighbours to fertilise your Crops for you.

2. Crop Mastery
You earn Stars that represent the three Crop Mastery Levels for any Crop by harvesting specific totals of that Crop. There are three Levels and the higher your own Level, the better the chance of obtaining Bushels. With three Mastery Stars, for example, you are likely to obtain at least 4 Bushels when harvesting only 12 or 16 squares of the Crop. With no Crop Mastery, you may not obtain a single Bushel even when harvesting 100 squares. Crop Mastery is something you can begin to earn at Level 10. My post on preparing for Level 25 discusses the advantages of choosing a Craft before you actually are able to embark upon any crafting career. Go to your Inventory before you Harvest any Crop, therefore, to 'Use' a Bushel to increase the Crop Mastery Points gained from the Harvest of each square of that Crop.

3. Bees
Bees certainly are necessary for pollination of Crops, allowing you to unlock temporary pollinated Crops at the Marketplace. I believe that they improve the chances of obtaining Bushels as well, although I could be mistaken about this.

Although Co-Op Jobs do not require any Bushels or any specific Crop Mastery Level, it always is best to combine goals in Farmville and take a Job that will net you the Bushels you personally need for your chosen Craft.

There is a trick with respect to any Co-Op Job that can give you a good jump on the achievement of the requirement of total number of Bushels. This was taught to me by an old Harvest Moon friend of mine. What you do is plant almost your entire field with one or more of the Crops needed for the Co-Op Job you intend to Start/Join. Leave at least eight squares tilled but vacant!

When the Crops are fully mature, Start/Join the Co-op Job and then, BEFORE you harvest any of the ripened Crops, plant the squares that remain vacant with the same Crop. Once you have planted new seeds in the eight to twelve squares that you kept vacant, you can harvest the SAME NUMBER of ripened Crops. Do not harvest more Crops than you seeded, however, as they will not be counted towards the Co-Op total.

You see, you can trick the game into believing that the ripened Crops were planted during the course of the Job only if you seed an equivalent number of squares BEFORE you harvest the others. It is a little tedious perhaps, because you must alternate between Harvester, Tractor and Seeder again and again unless you have the new Combine machine but it can be worth the effort. After this initial cheat, you will be able to harvest the entire field the next time the Crops mature, obviously. It is only the initial harvest that has to be counted carefully.

Fertilisation Strategies:

'Fertilise All' will fertilise every tilled square on your field, whether or not Crops have been planted and even when Crops are fully mature. DO NOT WASTE YOUR FERTILISE ALL! Study your field before you use the item. If any of the Crops have been fertilised, harvest them and re-till the squares before you use the 'Fertilise All'. This is an important tip but easy to forget when one is involved in any harvest.

Using the Crafting Option

The Crafting Option provides many rewards for an ambitious player. For a start, you can craft Items that at present can be traded for fuel but that ultimately will be able to be traded for a diverse variety of special items. Furthermore, players who have a Market Stall can buy your Crafted Items daily, giving you an additional source of income. Note that the Bushels at your Market Stall can be taken by other players as well and you will derive income from that.

The Co-op Option is another source of Rewards even for players who do not have a Crafting building yet, but for those with a Craft, it offers additional rewards.

At Level 1, a player with a Crafting Building has limited options in terms of the Recipes he/she can complete. For these Recipes, Co-op Jobs exist as well and there are other Co-op Jobs that are not connected with Crafting, available to any player when he/she unlocks the basic Co-op option. The Co-op Jobs reward participants with Coins, XP and one to three sets of Bushels for the Crafting Recipe of their choice. Each participant can choose his/her own Reward in terms of the Bushels he/she wants to take.

Your own choice of Craft does not limit the Co-op Jobs you can accept and when completed, the Reward in the form of Bushels will be appropriate to your own Craft. In other words, a player with a Bakery can participate in a Spa Co-op Job and when completed, will be able to choose sets of Bushels for Bakery Recipes.

The Co-op Crafting Jobs are based on the Recipes for each of the three Crafts, but in any Co-op Crafting Job, there will be only three required Crops, irrespective of the number of Crops required to complete the actual Recipe.

Tips about Gifts

Although the game will tell you that you can send only one Gift per day to any Neighbour, the total actually is three. You have to wait a few hours, of course, before you will be able to send another Gift. The tip here involves the acceptance of Gifts from a single Friend. A prompt will appear with the gift advising you to send a 'Thank you Gift' in return. DO THIS ONLY WITH THE BEST ITEM THAT THE PLAYER HAS SENT IN THE CASE OF MULTIPLE GIFTS! Once you have sent a Thank-You Gift, you either have to wait eight hours before accepting the next one from the player or give up the opportunity to keep the Gift 'live'.

I will explain this further. As you only can send one 'Thank you Gift' in an eight hour period, if there are multiple Gifts from a single Player, accepting all of them will end the Gift process except for the one for which you chose to send a Thank you Gift'.

In other words, a Player sends you the following:

A Train Whistle
A Special Delivery
A Cow

The best of these Gifts is the Special Delivery as it will contain construction materials for your Current Building projects. Moreover, Special Deliveries ARE Special. The game issues an invitation to send them rarely. They do not appear on the regular Gift Page. If, however, you accept the Train Whistle first AND click on the invitation to send a Thank You Gift for that, then proceed to accept the Special Delivery and the Cow, the latter Gifts will be 'dead' in terms of being able to return them to the original sender.

Why is this important? If your Friend sends you a Thank You Gift in return, the Gift will remain 'live' and you can send it back and forth indefinitely. If you are trying to complete a number of construction projects, this can be invaluable. A host of Train Whistles is not as useful. A host of Cows can be useful, but there is nothing special about them. They will appear on the Gifts Page regularly.

That is the first little Tip. The second involves Mystery Gifts. The game will urge you to send Mystery Gifts as 'they can contain fuel' but in fact, they can contain items that are far more valuable to a player. Although they may contain weird items such as Old Bikes or Owl Statues, they can contain Seeders and Harvesters as well! These items cost 30,000 Coins each.

In the early days of my involvement, I told one of my Harvest Moon friends that I wouldn't use machines in farming. I was a purist. Now, however, beyond Level 20 and involved in the crafting of goods, the machines are a godsend. If, therefore, you would like to have the farming machinery and don't have sufficient income for them, send Mystery Gifts to your Friends, so that they will return them to you.

Bees

It probably would be useful to mention the Beehive and the advantages of having a populated Hive on your farm. There appear to be no Level requirements to the Beehive. As with most new options, Beehives were given freely to active players but now must be purchased at the Marketplace for the sum of 5,000 Coins.

A Beehive must be constructed unfortunately, which means that you must go through the usual process of begging for materials from Neighbours and other Farmers. In my innocence, I thought that the completion of the Beehive would allow me to house all the Honeybees collected over time in my Gift Box, but in fact, you must have a Queen Bee before any Honeybee will be allowed to enter the Hive.

Although the game will instruct you to find Queen Bees among the Flowers, they can be found when you are tending to Crops of any kind either on your own farm or on that of a Neighbour. Any Player who finds a Queen Bee can 'share' with other Players by posting the result. It therefore is not impossible to obtain a Queen Bee. My advice, however, to any new Player would be to find a notice of a Queen Bee that is being shared long before your Beehive is completed and stash her in your Gift Box for future use.

The actual effect of a flourishing Beehive, apart from the ability to harvest Honey, is the change of pollination. When pollination occurs, you will be able to find special pollinated Seeds in the Marketplace. Again, in my ignorance, I assumed that these Seeds once offered would be available always. In fact, it appears that they are available only for a day or so and then the Seeds offered will revert to the ordinary variety.

Pets

Although you can purchase or obtain a number of different Animals that would be regarded as Pets in the real world, only Dogs actually are defined as Pets in Farmville.

A Pet can be named and will have the icon of a Dog Tag beside it at the Market.

Dogs are sold as specific Breeds but often you can choose between three different colours. When you purchase a Dog, it will be a Puppy who will become an Adult in a fortnight or 14 Days. You need to feed the Puppy daily and the Food will be given to you at the time of purchase in the form of Kibble.

When the Dog becomes hungry, the icon of the Kibble will appear over its head. This signifies that it is feeding time. Simply take the Kibble from your Gift Box and click on the Dog to feed it.

Here is the game prompt when you have purchased and named your Puppy:

Feed Raincloud when she is hungry. Her Kibble is in your gift Box. She will grow up in 2 weeks.

The Beehive Quest

On 12 July, Farmville announced a new option in the form of Bees, placing a Free Beehive in every Player's Gift Box as soon as he/she accessed the game.

The description of the Beehive is: Ask your friends for parts to build a Beehive! A completed Beehive allows you to grow thriving honeybees which will produce pollinated crops!

As indicated in the description, the Beehive given to players is simply the skeletal frame and there are Materials that must be collected in order to complete it. The Materials are as follows:

10 Wooden Boards
10 Nails
10 Bricks

In the Materials Menu is another Box giving an Option either to 'Send Gifts' or to 'Complete Now'. With the bare framework, you are given 1 Smoker, so the Option to 'Complete Now', if exercised immediately, would cost 49 Farm Cash.

It is evident that the Items for the Beehive Quest that are included in the Gifts Menu will be cyclical in nature as are Items for any Limited Edition Quest. On 11 July, the Items offered as Free Gifts were a Honeybee and Beeswax.

If you access the 'Send Gifts' Menu from the Beehive foundation, the only Items that will appear are the Limited Edition Items, which include at present Items for the Tuscan Wedding and Building Materials.

With the initial Announcement of the Bee Quest, Farmville declared:

Build a Beehive, Find the Queen Bee and Grow your Swarm.

Honeybees are Free Gifts, but can be purchased in groups of 5 at the Market as well. The Queen Bee must be purchased at the Market for 10 Farm Cash.

Honeybee Description:

Honeybeees are used for your Beehive and allow you to produce pollinated crops. You need a completed Beehive and a Queen Bee in order to have Honeybees.

Queen Bee description:

A Queen Bee can be placed in yoru completed Beehive and allows you to start building your honeybee colony. You can only have one Queen Bee at a time.

Ordinary Crop Seeds

Crops are the 'bread and butter' of any Farming Enterprise. The essential facts about any Crop are its Cost, the time it takes to mature, the amount of Experience or XP given for growing the Crop, the value of its Harvest and the Level of Experience at which it is unlocked.

One other piece of data is given for each of the Crops in Farmville in the form of the Mastery points at the first, second and third degree. Mastery of a specific Crop at a specific degree sometimes is a requirement for unlocking a new Crop or Option.

When you achieve the first degree of Mastery of any Crop, you will obtain 1 Star. At the 2nd Degree, you will obain another Star. The third and final Degree will be acknowledged with three Stars.

Whenever you achieve a degree of Mastery, you will be rewarded with XP and Coins.

Trees

Fruit on Trees, unlike Crops that are sowed on the ground, are not time-limited in terms of survival past the time of 'readiness' to be harvested. If, therefore, you have very limited access to Facebook (or the internet), your best strategy would be to plant a large number of Trees on your Farm. Animals, likewise, do not perish if you do not interact with them when they are 'ready'. Animal interactions will be covered in a separate post.

Note that there are two types of Trees. The first, listed in the Tree Section at the Market, bear Fruit. The second type is strictly ornamental and is listed in the Decorations Section at the Market. Trees in the Free Gifts Menu fall into both Categories.

Tree Helpers

Arbourists are Farm Labourers that can be purchased or given as Rewards by Farmville for various accomplishments. An Arbourist when 'Used' will harvest every Tree on your Farm that is ready for harvest. Each Arbourist can be used only once, so it is best to wait until EVERY Tree on your Farm is ready to be harvested before using one.

Near the end of 2010, a new option was introduced in the form of the Orchard. A total of 20 Trees can be placed in the Orchard and it then is harvested as a single entity. Harvesting will produce either a coin reward or a 'Mystery Seedling'. As of February 2011, it can produce Watering Cans as well. Arbourists now will harvest only those Trees that are not contained in an Orchard.

A player, incidentally, can build more than one Orchard.

Mystery Seedlings

Although Orchards have been available in Farmville for some time now, it is only recently that I discovered how addictive the option can be. Unlike Fantasy Kingdoms, which is highly fanciful in terms of Crops and Trees, the Crops and Trees in Farmville are divided sharply into two very distinct categories. There are real Crops and Trees and fantasy Crops and Tree. Oddly enough, despite my love of fantasy, I initially was predisposed to shun the fantasy Crops and Trees in Farmville. I wanted to grow real Crops and create a landscape that was realistic...

There was another consideration here, which was the fact that all fantasy Trees require a Farm Cash investment unless you find one on the feed. This is where the Orchard becomes vital. By placing Trees in an Orchard, a player has a chance of creating a 'Mystery Seedling'. Eight Watering Cans are required to grow a Mystery Seedling after it is placed. You cannot be certain of the identity of the Seedling until you have used the eighth Watering Can. The grown Tree then can be shared with one other player. You either can publish to all friends, all friends of friends, Every one or publish the offer to specific players.

An Orchard can contain a total of twenty Trees. They can be mixed or can consist of Trees of a single variety. When harvested, an Orchard can yield either Watering Cans or a Mystery Seedling as well as coins in every case. Mystery Seedlings can be shared with other players but, unlike an adult Tree produced from a Seedling, can be shared with at least three other players.

Any player who does not own a Fantasy Tree therefore can obtain one either by taking a grown Tree from the Feed or by taking a Mystery Seedling shared by another player. Although an Orchard filled with Fantasy Trees has a better chance of creating Mystery Seedlings that will grow into a Fantasy Tree, it evidently is not guaranteed.

Mystery Seedlings moreover will stack in your Gift Box. If, therefore, you take a number of Mystery Seedlings instead of taking only one and growing it into maturity before you take another, it is almost impossible to judge what will occur when you plant a Mystery Seedling from your stack.

There is a certain rhythm to the process of harvesting and growing Trees. When you harvest an Orchard, you will receive coins and a Mystery Seedling or Coins and a Watering Can. You then have an option to share the Seedling/Watering Can with friends. This places either a Watering Can or a Mystery Seedling on the feed for others to use.

When you plant a Mystery Seedling, you will have the option to publish the fact. There really is no benefit to this, apart from alerting other players to the fact that you are beginning the process of growing one. After you use the fourth Watering Can, however, you will have the option of sharing Watering Cans. This places Watering Cans on the feed for other players. When you have used the eighth Watering Can, the adult Tree will materialise. You then have the option of sharing this Tree with one Friend.

In other words, for every Mystery Seedling you grow, you have an opportunity of sharing Watering Cans with four other players. If your Neighbours harvest their Orchards regularly, it is possible to maintain a fairly decent supply of Watering Cans as well as Mystery Seedlings from the Feed as well as your own Orchards.

Tree Mastery as well as Crop Mastery exists now in Farmville but unlike Crop Mastery, which gives a player additional Bushels, Tree Mastery evidently will not increase your chances of obtaining Mystery Seedlings.

An Orchard frame costs 1000 Coins and requires 10 Bricks, 10 Boards and 10 Nails to complete. A completed Orchard can be purchased for 30 Farm Cash. There is a limit to the number of Orchard frames a player can purchase. This appears to be six. There may be no limit to the number of completed Orchards a player can purchase.

Perhaps some one will correct me on this point, but it is my experience and the experience of other players with whom I have spoken on the topic. 'Mystery Seedlings' ARE mysterious!

Note that Mystery Seedlings always will create Level 2 Trees. The ordinary Trees that are given by Farmville or sold in the Marketplace for Coins tend to be Level 1 Trees. Giant Trees always are Level 2 Trees. New types of Trees created from Level 1 Trees, whether ordinary Trees or Fantasy Trees, are Level 2.

The Greenhouse

Farmville recently took a page from the Harvest Moon universe to create a new Greenhouse option where hybrid Crops can be grown by combining two types of Seeds.

The Greenhouse costs 5 Coins, if you were not playing the game on the day of its release and is a construction project that requires 4 Nails, 4 Wooden Boards and 4 Bricks. As with most construction projects, once completed, it can be expanded.

The creation of any hybrid Seed takes three days but, with the help of Neighbours, you can speed the process.

The real advantage of the Greenhouse for EVERY player is the ability to harvest from a Neighbour's Greenhouse during a visit. This does not appear to require the presence of mature Seeds in the actual Greenhouse. Rather, the visitor always should obtain 5 Seeds of a randomly chosen hybrid Crop when he/she harvests a Neighbour's Greenhouse.
As always, the buildings with which a visitor can interact on a Neighbour's Farm are outlined in blue.

Hybrid Seeds

Hybrid Seeds tend to be more valuable than the original Seeds from which they were created. This is very useful when a player is at a low Level in the game. A List of some of the Hybrids includes:

Another advantage of hybrid Crops for the beginner is the fact that they do not have Skill Level requirements. They are unlocked solely by acquisition, whether in your own Greenhouse or that of a Neighbour.

The Greenhouse itself has a Level Requirement, however, as do all building Project, but at this point in time, a new player does not need to purchase it. When he/she reaches Level 10 and unlocks Crop Mastery and Collections, a Greenhouse will be given to the player as well to place on the farm. Level 10 still is one of the most important milestones until a player reaches Level 25 and the ability to own and operate one of the three Craft buildings.

Hybrid Crops Tip

A beginner would be well advised to visit all Neighbours on a daily basis in order to harvest random hybrid Crops from their Greenhouses in the same way as he/she can feed the Chickens in the Neighbours' Chicken Coops to receive random Mystery Eggs.

The Crops available to low-level players before the hybrid option was developed were inexpansive to purchase but did not yield rich harvests either. Now, with the hybrid option, a player can reach Level 10 fairly easily if he/she has a few Neighbours at least and is diligent in obtaining hybrid seeds.

The Duck Pond

Another new option is the Duck Pond. A construction project as well, once completed, it can house all types of Ducks and Swans. Harvests of the Duck Pond produce coins or Ducklings of various types. A Duckling can be grown either by help from Neighbours or by paying Farmville Cash.

If you choose the Neighbour Help option, you have a total of seven days to obtain the help of seven Neighbours. Initially, you can choose between seven different varieties of Ducks and/or Swans. With the passing of each day, one type of Duck/Swan no longer will be available as a choice.

There are different varieties of Ducklings as well as adult Ducks and each has its own list of possible mature Ducks/Swans.

The Duck Pond is not available to a beginner but is unlocked at Level 5. At Level 5, the Chicken Coop is unlocked as well. The Duck Pond as a building project and the Chicken Coop each cost 5000 Coins. As the Chicken Coop is sold in completed form, however, it is wiser to purchase this before you invest in a Duck Pond.


Tending a Neighbour's Farm

The new Greenhouse in Farmville makes it easier for low-level players to increase their income and experience. First of all, in a visit to any Neighbour, a player now has the option to harvest a random type of Crop from the landowner's Greenhouse. Any visitor who harvests in this manner can share the results on his/her Wall, giving another player the option to collect hybrid Seeds.

A year ago, there were few activities for a visitor to another Farm. Now, any visitor can perform the following actions:

1. A total of 5 actions to fertilise or unwither Crops or to harvest from Trees or Animals;

2. Feeding the Chickens in a Coop;

3. Accessing the Animal Trough for Feed;

4. Harvesting from any seasonal Building such as Cupid's Castle during the Valentine season or the Leprecaun's Treehouse during March;

5. Feeding the Pigs in the Pigpen.

Whenever a visitor feeds Animals in a building, he/she will earn Coins and sometimes will obtain another reward, such as a Mystery Egg from a Coop, Animal Feed from the Animal Trough or Slop from the Pigpen. From any seasonal Building, the Rewards are specific to that season and the total will depend on the size of the building. The largest upgrade usually yields a total of 3 items. The smallest will yield 1.

The English Countryside

On the night of 22 March 2011, Farmville finally unveiled its new English Countryside with an initial Quest to take players to their new farms in the 'English Countryside'. Only players who have reached Level 20 can participate in this. It allows a player to have a second farm in a virtual England where special Crops and Animals can be grown and raised.

The Quests with their requirements and Rewards follow. A player who knows the Quest requirements in advance often can make his/her life in Farmville easier by preparing for a future Quest, particularly when it involves the harvest of Crops that grow slowly.

Cotton must be planted on the Home Farm but need not be harvested in order to travel to the new Farm. The first Crop that must be harvested in the English Countryside is 25 English Roses. This is followed by a Quest that requires the harvest of 75 Hops and 75 Barley. If you wish to grow both simultaneously, you will need to expand your Farm twice. Hops requires 10 Hours and Barley requires 12. If you expand your farm immediately and plant the Hops and Barley at the same time that you plant the 25 English Roses, you will be able to move forward faster!

A number of Items will be of great use in the English Countryside initially and if you cannot travel immediately, you may wish to begin to stockpile these materials. They include Bricks, Boards, Nails, Watering Cans, Shovels, Vehicle Parts and Bottles. Special Delivery boxes are very useful as they often contain building materials.

Try not to buy buildings in the English Countryside upon arrival. Most of the buildings you need will be given to you upon completion of various Quests. Even the Dariy Barn will be given to you when you reach the third position on the Map and complete the first Quest there.

The English Countryside Quests

In July 2011, all English Countryside Quests have been released, enabling players to reach the last location on the Map and to unlock the ability to grow ALL Crops on both Farms as well as accessing Storage from both farms from either location to transfer Items freely from one farm to the other. This, as well as an 'English Castle' is the final reward for completing the English Countryside Quest sequence.

Please note that some of the Quests have changed slightly. The Pub now is given to a Player almost immediately upon arrival at the second farm.

Upgrading your Craft

Upgrading your Craft

There are a couple of ways to upgrade your Craft. One can be achieved instantly by paying the required sum of Farm Cash. You can unlock the coin price upgrade by increasing the Level of your Recipes a specified number of times for each Level.

There are two methods by which your Recipe Level can be upgraded. The first is by making a Recipe again and again. You will see a gauge to the left of the Recipe that indicates your progress. When the gauge is filled completely, your Recipe will be upgraded. Each successive level requires more labour in terms of making the Recipe again and again than the previous level. For this reason, the quickest way to fulfil the specified total for any Level is by making the Recipes for the Craft Items of the LOWEST Levels.

There is one other way to upgrade your Recipes but this is accomplished by your Neighbours. Whenever a Neighbour buys a Craft Item, it has the effect of adding to the gauge that allows you to reach the next Level.

Level 2 Upgrade Requirements:
Pay 15 Farm Cash or unlock Coin Upgrade by upgrading your Recipes 6 times.

Level 3 Upgrade Requirements:
Pay 25 Farm Cash or unlock Coin Upgrade by upgrading your Recipes 18 more times.

Meanwhile, there are tasks that can be completed at any point as well as prompts that lead to new options:

Farm Expansions

If you explore the Farm expansion option by clicking on one of the boundaries of your farm:

Your friends can help you survey the land to expand your English farm. It's not too early to get started.
Ask for help

You will need two Friends to agree to survey your land in order to unlock the first expansion with Coins. Without the surveyors, you can purchase the 14 x 14 expansion for 20 FV Cash. The coin price is 25,000 Coins. The 16 x 16 Expansion costs 50,000 Coins and the 18 x 18 Expansion costs 100,000 Coins. Each is unlocked by more surveyors. By asking as many friends as possible from the start, you can unlock the options for a couple of expansions even if you do not have sufficient coins to purchase them immediately.

You are currently farming on your English Countryside Farm. If you travel, this farm will be paused and crops will not grow or wither until you come back. Do you want to travel to your Home Farm?

Now, however, you will be given a choice between this option and the option to allow time to run in both locations at once. This is more advantageous to players who have Orchards and slow-growing Crops.

When you see a Lush Soil bonus, you automatically get a boost to your Mastery or a free bushel!

Free Market Stall


This is a tip that is useful for players either on the Home Farm or in the English Countryside. DO NOT BUY YOUR FIRST MARKET STALL! When you see a feed that offers a sample from any of the Crafts, click on it. If you do not own a Market Stall yet, Farmville will offfer a Free Market Stall to you. You will find it in your Giftbox, thus saving yourself 50,000 Coins or 20 Farm Cash. In fact, you may notice that most buildings are given free at the appropriate time. If you buy buildings left, right and centre upon your initial arrival at the English Countryside, you will spend money unnecessarily!

The other way to obtain a free Market Stall at either farm is by harvesting Crops. If you have not purchased a Market Stall previously, the game will offer one when you harvest your first Bushel.

Orchards and Tree Purchases

In one of the early English countryside Quests, you are required to buy 10 Trees. If you begin to save Trees in your Giftbox before you arrive in 'England', placing them AFTER you begin this Quest will fulfil the requirement. DO NOT BUY ANY TREES WHEN YOU FIRST ARRIVE IN THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE! Wait until you reach the Quest!

Bushel Tips

Begin to collect Bushels as soon as you arrive in the English Countryside with an eye to the Quests. You will need a total of 8 Bushels of Hops and 8 Bushels of Barley to make 2 portions of Duke's Stout!

Ask Friends Tip

This is a tip that will help your Neighbours. In many of the Farmville Quests, whether they are festival Quests or English Countryside Quests, you have an option to Ask Friends for a specific number of Items. The Special Quest Items appear in your Giftbox but cannot be placed. They can be used only for the specific Quest to which they are attached. Any extra Items above and beyond the required number will stay in your Giftbox until you sell them. Incidentally, they command a better price than ordinary Items that can be placed as any Quest Item can be sold for 100 coins. This is not an encouragement to be greedy and take Quest Items from Feeds that you do not need!

The Good Neighbour Tip is as follows: Farmville will not count the Quest Items that remain in your Giftbox. It is better to collect them there than apply them to the Quest until you reach the required total. BEFORE you apply the Items to the Quest, you should access the Quest once more and use the option to 'Ask Friends' for the Quest Item AGAIN. What this does is allow your Neighbours who still need the Item to obtain it. There always is a limit to the number of Friends/Neighbours who can collect any given Item from the Feed. Quest Items appear to allow more Neighbours to collect than Items such as Animals born or found on the Farm, Mystery Seedlings, Watering Cans and Building Materials, but there still IS a limit. I believe that you must wait 6 Hours in any Quest situation before you are allowed to 'Ask Friends' again for an Item.

Using the Combine

Although the Super Combine is available for purchase on the Home Farm, it is rather expensive and many players, including myself, were unfamiliar with its use until we reached the English Countryside and found a Broken Combine on hand, available for our use once we had repaired it with 5 Vehicle Parts. A Combine will harvest, till and plant Seeds but what it will NOT do is till untilled soil. You therefore must till the soil initially by hand or use a Tractor to do so. A Tractor costs 5,000 Coins.

Although Farmville promises players a Family Tree or breeding chart for the English Countryside at some point, players who are using precious Love Potions and Bottles NOW are interested in learning the results they can expect from any two sheep who are induced to behave romantically towards one another.

The initial Sheep Pen accommodates a total of 20 Sheep but has a single breeding pen. You are given your first Ram, Brutus, in one of the Quests and then are given an Ewe named Gertrude in another Quest. Ordinary Sheep are females and can be used for Breeding, as can special Sheep from the Home Farm, such as Sneezy Sheep, Clover Sheep, Red Sheep and so on. Once placed, no animal can travel to another farm. The only Sheep that can be taken to the English Countryside are those that never were placed on the Home Farm and thus remain in your GiftBox. It would have been nice if Farmville had alerted us to the fact tat the Polka-Dot Sheep was intended for the British Countryside and therefore should not be placed on the Home Farm if one had any desire to use it in Breeding.

To breed, you must choose a Ram and one of your Ewes. You can pay Farm Cash for an instant result or you can use 5 Love Potions for the same result. Each Love Potion used reduces breeding time and increases the odds of success. You can breed Sheep without using any Love Potions but it takes 24 hours and your chances of success are slim.

Lamb Adoptions

If you are trying to breed a particular colour or gender of Sheep and the lamb that results from any breeding attempt does not appear to conform to your requirements, you have the option to give away the lamb rather than keeping it to raise yourself. Simply choose the option to 'Give Away' the lamb and you can advertise its availability on the feed. Lambs that are adopted are placed in the Giftbox. A player cannot adopt more than one lamb per day.

Incidentally, the Quest that requires you to place a Lamb can be completed with a Lamb that is adopted rather than bred on your own Farm.


A Wrinkle in Time

The English Countryside basically is a player's 2nd Farm, available only after he/she attains Level 20. The reason for this probably is the fact that many of the Quests require crafting. There is no cost for the 2nd Farm, but you will have to pay to upgrade it once you arrive. The first upgrade actually is part of one of the initial Quests.

If you can find surveyors for your Farm, you can pay for upgrades with coins rather than Farm Cash. 'Surveyors' are Neighbours who accept your Request to survey the farm, making the requirement similar to the Neighbour total requirement for upgrades on the Home Farm.

One peculiarity of the Farmville English Countryside originally was that time will not run at all on the farm you have left. In other words, when you were in the English Countryside, your Home Farm would be 'paused' and vice versa. Crops would not wither, but they will not grow either. Trees in Orchards would not become ready for Harvest, nor will any of your Animals.

This has been changed, however, and players now have the choice of pausing one farm when they change their location or of allowing both farms to operate normally irrespective of the player's current location. Whenever a player wishes to travel between farms, the menu will appear, allowing him/her to set the option either way.

There is another twist to this that is very inconvenient for your Neighbours. When your Character is on the Home Farm, Bushels that have been harvested there will be available at your Stalls but, when you travel to the English Countryside, only those Bushels currently displayed on your English Stalls will be available to your Neighbours. In other words, your physical presence is required if you wish to offer Bushels to your Neighbours from a specific farm. This is not really fair to your Neighbours as they cannot control your comings and goings.

There is one general rule to follow always when playing Farmville and it applies to the English Countryside as well:: Do not buy buildings for Animals, Storage or any other purpose when you arrive. Most of these will be given to you upon completion of Quests. The only building you really need to purchase in the English Countryside is a Dairy Farm.

Sheep Breeding

The initial Sheep Pen accommodates a total of 20 Sheep but has a single breeding pen. You are given your first Ram, Brutus, in one of the Quests and then are given an Ewe named Gertrude in another Quest. Ordinary Sheep are females and can be used for Breeding, as can special Sheep from the Home Farm, such as Sneezy Sheep, Clover Sheep, Red Sheep and so on.

To breed, you must choose a Ram and one of your Ewes. You can pay FV Cash for an instant result or you can use 5 Love Potions for the same result. Each Love Potion used reduces breeding time and increases the odds of success. You can breed Sheep without using any Love Potions but it takes 24 hours and your chances of success are slim. (Do not click too quickly on the options when breeding.)

Incidentally, although many of the 'special' Reward Sheep that were given at the Home Farm for holidays, including the Luv Ewe, the Thank Ewe, Red Sheep and so on can be used for Breeding in England, provided that you kept them in your Gift Box and did not place them, the Valentine Ram cannot be placed in the Sheep Pen and therefore is not a breeding Ram. This is very sad as it excited me initially when I thought of the possibilities such a Ram would evoke.

It is very difficult to describe some of the hybrids in terms of colour. There are many different results. Where an Animal is two colours, those colours can be on top and bottom, in the front and the back or be a pattern such as dots on a solid colour base. It is not sufficient to describe an Animal as purple or green. There are different tones of each colour. There are very dark purples, dark purples that are tinged with blue, light purples tinged with blue, bright lavenders and dull lavenders.

In fact, beyond this are the extraordinary special Sheep that differ from the duo-tone Sheep, the dotted Sheep and the solid tone Sheep. There are special Sheep with Stars instead of dots and even more astounding, 'flasher' sheep that change colour each instant.

It appears that the probability of obtaining a girl is higher than that of obtaining a boy. There usually are two 'normal' results that are most likely.. In one, the lamb is identical or almost identical to one of the parents. In the other, the lamb represents a synthesis of both. One can, however, obtain a pure white Ram or Ewe. Some players refer to these as 'duds' because they do not carry the genes of special Rams and Ewes used to create them.

Now, whenever a player chooses a Ram and an Ewe to breed, all possible results will be displayed in a box above their heads. Originally, Players were able to produce astonishing results but Zynga restricted this. Now, only Rams carry patterns and the Ewes can carry only colours. If you breed a Ram with a pattern to any Ewe, you have a 50% chance of obtaining a Lamb with the same pattern. The Ewe's colour may affect the result but any pattern that the Ewe has will not be bred into the Lamb.

If you wish to pay a random amount of FV Cash, you can 'guarantee' the Ram's pattern in the Lamb. The amount that is charged for this guarantee, like the amount that is charged to unwither Crops when a Player first begins to harvest after logging into the game, IS random and can be anything from 1 FV Cash to 5 FV Cash.

There is one significant problem with this guaranteed result, however. Payment guarantees only that the Lamb will have the pattern of the Father. If, however, the Lamb is a girl, that pattern will stop with the Ewe when grown! If a player wishes to share a pattern with a Neighbour, therefore, he/she must share a boy Lamb and not a girl.

Specific Patterns in Rams are sold in the Marketplace or can be obtained as Rewards for achieving specific Levels of Mastery in breeding. If a Lamb with a Mastery Pattern is given to a Neighbour, the Neighbour will be able to use it for Breeding only when he/she has attained the same Level of Mastery. With respect to the Patterns of Rams sold in the Marketplace, there are no Mastery Level restrictions.

Unusual and exotic Sheep are sold in the Marketplace or are given as Rewards for completing Quests. Remember always that ANY Sheep will not be able to pass on a pattern in breeding. They only will affect colouring.

Enlarging the Gene Pool

Obviously, ultimately, the only way to obtain all the diferent colours of Sheep is by purchasing the Ewes and Rams in the Marketplace. It is not necessary for EVERY player to purchase EVERY Ewe and Ram, however, as there is the adoption option whenever a new lamb is born. There is a limit to the number of lambs that any player can adopt on a single day. A player can adopt no more than one lamb in any given day. Be warned, therefore, when setting a lamb for adoption that you either need to set it to more than one player or make certain that the player who is named CAN adopt the lamb.

The day appears to begin when the date changes rather than being a 23 hour Farmville time period. That gives a player who adopted a lamb previously on any day a chance to adopt the 2nd lamb first thing in the morning.

If you have Neighbours in Farmville who are willing to work with you on sheep breeding, you can try to allocate the task of purchasing the Ewes and Rams in the Marketplace fairly rather than placing the burden on one player. If adoptions are frequent, players should be able to obtain a wide spectrum of colours within a short period.

Note that completion of the final English Countryside Quest will allow players to build a Sheep Pen on the Home Farm, thereby allowing lambs to be placed on either Farm.

As previously indicated, only Rams can be bred for patterns so it is necessary to give a Neighbour a boy Lamb if you wish to share any Pattern. Rams who are given as Rewards for Sheep Breeding Mastery, when adopted, cannot be bred until the recipient has achieved the necessary level of Breeding Mastery.

Pig Breeding

The rules for Pig Breeding are identical to those for Sheep Breeding. As with Sheep, only the male Boar can carry the Pattern to the next generation. Sows carry colour.

April Wishing Well

The Wishing Well for April could be placed on either Farm. As with the earlier Wishing Well for St. Patrick's Day, there are different levels of Reward Items, obtained by 'hitting' a list of items with your Lucky Pennies. Lucky Pennies, as of July, still can be given as Free Gifts but now can be crafted in the new Workshop as well.

Springtime Rewards

In April, a Spring Garden was given. Like most of the Festival or Holiday items, it had to be constructed but its first level required only 4 Bricks, 4 Nails and 4 Boards. As you complete the higher levels of construction, its 'harvest' ultimately will be greater but like all Festival Reward buildings, players will not be able to harvest it until the actual item that will contain the counted items appears. In other words, for Valentine's Day, the building was Cupid's Castle but the item that actually held the Valentines that were totaled for rewards was a postbox. The postbox was released a week or so after the Cupid's Castle was released to give players time to complete the build.

New Craftshop and Silo

Farmville has been expanding almost too quickly in the past few months, with new options to craft goods from Recipes in a number of different buildings and locations. The original choice between Home Farm Crafting Spa, Winery or Bakery still is the first crafting option, unlocked when a player attains Level 25. Recently, however, a Player reported that, when she reached Level 25, she was NOT given any choice to accept a free Spa, Winery or Bakery. She had to choose one in the Marketplace and pay 100,000 Coins for it.

In the English Countryside, obtaining a Pub no longer requires any steps or quests. You simply will be given one and told to get on with it now.

A Craftshop recently was introduced which could be constructed both on the Home Farm and on the English Farm or on the farm of your choice. A variety of new Recipes using Bushels from existing Crops were introduced with it.

The most recent option, introduced a couple of days ago, is the Crafting Silo. This is not a Crafting Building per se but as its name suggests, simply a Storage Silo for new Items that can be harvested from existing Animals or Trees. Among the new Items are Bags of Manure and Baskets of Fruits, such as Cherry, Lemon and Orange. Wool Bundles can be harvested from Sheep and Apple Wood can be harvested from any type of Apple Tree, including Chrome Apple Trees.

Items that can be crafted vary wildly from simple construction materials to a Swiss Cottage. In time, the new Crafting option could be fun, but at the moment, Storage Space in the initial Crafting Silo is extremely limited and every Item I obtain fills it, making it impossible to organise any Recipes yet. I therefore am scrambling to expand the Silo.

Like the Craftshop, a player can opt to place one on each farm. This doubles storage space from 10 to 20, but space for 20 items is insufficient when one finds that one can obtain six or seven Wool Bundles from a single Sheep Pen harvest.

Once a Silo has been upgraded, it will store 50 Items. If a Silo is upgraded on BOTH Farms, a player will have a storage capacity of 100 Items. There are no further upgrades beyond the first one. It definitely is beneficial to upgrade both Silos as quickly as possible.

Unlike Recipes that are completed in the Spa, Winery, Bakery or Pub, each of the Craftshop Recipes has its own timeframe. For example, I believe that a Stone Arch takes six hours to complete, but a Stone Wall takes only 30 minutes. Unlike the other crafting options, however, you can work on only one Recipe at any given time in the Craftshop.

As with any Recipes List in Farmville, the order in which Recipes appear depends on the ingredients that a player currently possesses. A Recipe for which all ingredients are present will appear at the top of the list. Recipes for which no ingredients currently are held will be at the bottom. I have chosen to organise the list according to type, with construction materials at the top and complete items such as Swiss Cabin and Horse Sculpture last.

Note that there is an option to obtain 'Help' from other players in the new Craftshop. A player posts a request for Help on his/her Wall and the first four players that respond will be assumed to help with the next recipe. When a player has four helpers, he/she will obtain double the product. In other words, if crafting a Love Potion with four helpers, the player will obtain 2 Love Potions rather than 1. The helpers do not appear to gain any real benefit apart from the knowledge that they have acted as good neighbours.

A final note: Some of the Recipes given above are variations on Recipes that were released with the original Workshop. You no longer will be able to craft the item using the original Recipe now. A Love Potion formerly could be made using Strawberry, Tomato and Tulip Bushels. Now you must use Cherry Baskets instead of Tulip Bushels. (Actually, this is the 3rd variation on the Recipe for crafting Love Potions. The first was a Limited Edition Recipe in the English Countryside Pub!)
